White River Valley High School at Switz City, Indiana, opened its doors at the beginning of the 1990-91 school year as a result of a consolidation of Central Jr./Sr. High School at Switz City, L & M Jr./Sr. High School at Lyons and Worthington-Jefferson Jr./Sr. High School at Worthington. White River Valley High School incorporates approximately 220 square miles of Greene County, and is comprised of the townships of Jefferson, Smith, Fairplay, Grant, Washington, Stafford, Cass, and the town of Worthington. Its feeder schools are WRV Middle School in Lyons, Indiana and WRV Elementary in Worthington, Indiana.
White River Valley High School is a comprehensive six-year public secondary school with an approximate enrollment of 410 students, grades 7 through 12. Socio-economic data reveals a student population comprised of 99% white ethnicity with 41% of the student population on the free/reduced lunch program. The corporation is a member of the Greene-Sullivan Special Education CO-OP along with other Greene County schools and schools from neighboring Sullivan County. The school also participates in a vocational program with neighboring counties called Twin Rivers. Current economic problems of the community and the surrounding area have placed a large burden on the schools as they try to deal with students who are coming from difficult conditions.
The school is staffed by 28 professionals including a full-time counselor, a full-time librarian, a full-time computer coordinator, a full-time nurse, two special education teachers, a full-time assistant principal, athletic director, and a full-time principal. They are supported by 5 teaching aides, one full-time secretary, one ECA treasurer, and one secretary shared by the office and athletic department. White River Valley High School offers a diverse curriculum as compared to other schools of our size. Students have the opportunity to participate in agriculture, industrial technology, family and consumer science, business, and Project Lead the Way. The curriculum offered allows students to receive a quality education that prepares them for the future in several areas. Further, White River Valley High School offers advanced placement and dual credit course offerings.
